Supporting Art in Eastbourne and Surrounding Areas

The Society of Eastbourne Artists  staged an excellent art exhibition on May 25th, 26th and 27th at the Town Hall Eastbourne.  Madam Mayor Candy Vaughn officially opened the exhibition and commented on how excited she was at the quality of the paintings for sale.  She chose Louise Crowley's painting of Roseberry Avenue, London to receive the Mayor's Challenge Cup  as she felt the artist really successfully portrayed the reflections.  For the Runner Up she found it a difficult task and eventually decided on Anne Claude Downs painting of Cyril the Squirrel.   Will Carter's painting of Hetty was highly commended by her. There  were more than 170 paintings and around 60 unframed portfolios exhibited. The exhibition was attended by around 600 visitors over the three days.

A percentage of sales, raffle proceeds and donations totalling £420 were collected for the Mayor’s charities which are the Chasely Trust and the Leaf Hall Disability Access Fund.

The Herald Trophy was won by Jackie Steggall for her painting Looking Towards Coastguard Cottages and there were certificates awarded for Highly Commended in Portrait – Pauline Birdsall, Animal,/Bird – Sylvia Huggair, Abstract – Liz Purkis, Landscape – Lou Crowley  and Still Life /Floral -  Annalynn Cooke and Rona Cruisey

The Andrew Forrest Memorial Trophy was won by Annalynn Cooke for her Bird of Paradise painting

The next exhibition will be held on 2nd 3rd November at the Cavendish  Hotel on Grand Parade

All SEA Events are held at St Saviour's Church Hall, South Street, Eastbourne on the second Thursday of each month, unless otherwise stated.

They are free to members and guests are charged at £4:00 each.

There is no charge for entry to the Art Exhibitions but we do encourage visitors to donate to support the Mayor of Eastbourne's charities.

On Thursday November 11 the Society welcomed Kerry Bennett who produced a fascinating interesting and inspiring demonstration of her technique of pen and wash to create a soft finish.

Whilst painting her favourite subject of chickens  she used pen and water to soften the outlines and used salt to produce a soft feathery effect.

She described the technique very well allowing members to understand the finer details of creating such a picture, using the pen and water to create the tonal values of the work before using delicate washes to achieve the effect she was looking for.
